A First for Ahwatukee, By a Church for Ahwatukee

Saturday, January 31, 2026 was DFUMC's debut as the host of a Borderlands Produce Rescue Distribution event.  The P.O.W.W.O.W. (Produce on Wheels With Out Waste) was the first ever in Ahwatukee, and it was nearly flawless.
87 supporters of BPR, who had each made a donation of $20 online, drove up to receive a box of around 70 pounds of rescued produce in appreciation for their support.
DFUMC has committed to hosting 4 P.O.W.W.O.W.s now through October in the months that have 5 Saturdays.  Our second one will be held Saturday, May 30, 2026.
We had such a good time, from the excruciatingly early hour that the produce was unloaded in our parking lot, until the last box was delivered and the cleanup was done.  To our great joy, Borderlands agreed to donate the excess produce to Justa Center, and there was a lot!
The morning felt like a real celebration of our connection to our church family and to the Ahwatukee community and beyond.  In fact, there were some community members helping out on Saturday morning.
The volunteer sign-up process is handled through Borderland's website at borderlandsproducerescue.org.  Borderlands has become a popular organization over its 30-year history, and P.O.W.W.O.W. volunteer slots are filled fast. But there were many volunteer church members who helped in other ways:  making signs, donating water and snacks, donating reflective vests and traffic cones, and just encouraging us as we got ready for the event.  There are many ways to help, and it all works together for good.
Thank you to everybody who supported this wonderful project!
