Justa's Success in Housing Homeless Elders
08.13.25 | Articles, Ministries | by Jane Peterson
A Path from the Streets to Stability
The journey begins with seniors receiving benefits, developing income streams, and working with counselors to assess readiness for independent living. From there, they can either move into transitional housing—with six months of rent assistance and support—or go straight into permanent housing if they’re ready. Permanent residents pay their own rent, stay clean and sober, and maintain their homes with pride.
Real Lives, Real Impact
In June and July alone, Justa helped 8 seniors move into transitional housing and 14 into permanent homes. That’s 22 lives changed in just two months. For all of 2025 so far, 66 seniors have found safe, stable housing.
The Power of a Starter Kit
To help them feel truly at home, DFUMC has delivered 67 starter kits, filled with essentials like towels, linens, kitchenware, coffee makers, and toasters. These simple gifts offer more than comfort—they provide dignity, hope, and a new beginning.
Your Generosity in Action
Thanks to your continued support, seniors also receive warm winter clothing, summer care items, pantry goods, and during the summer months , sandwich lunches. These donations make a real difference in the day-to-day lives of those transitioning into stability.
Recognizing Our Leaders
A heartfelt thank-you goes to the Missions Committee: Shirley Coomer, Michelle Wachter, Gina VanderPloeg, Sharon Newman-Matt, Jane Peterson, Carolyn Brinkley, Bev Jones, and Gerry Gould. Their leadership and dedication power this mission forward.
Looking Ahead
With 20 new U-Haul boxes purchased, more starter kits are being prepared. The biggest challenge now is finding affordable apartments—there are more seniors ready to move in than there are places available. But the team remains persistent and faithful.
