TAPP Ministry: Outreach in Action

During a recent worship service, Patti Wullen, speaking on behalf of the Outreach Committee, shared about a ministry that reflects the heart of our church and brings hope to young families in our wider community—the TAPP Ministry.
Patti Wullen explained that a central part of TAPP’s work is meeting very basic, everyday needs for teenage parents. Through the TAPP Pantry, young parents receive essential items such as diapers, wipes, baby clothing, blankets, new bottles, and other baby equipment. While these items may seem simple, Patti shared that for a teenage parent they can provide tremendous relief, dignity, and encouragement.
She also described APPLES (Adolescent Pregnancy and Parenting Little Essential Store), a key component of the ministry. Through APPLES, students are able to “purchase” baby supplies using baby bucks. These baby bucks are earned through good grades, school attendance, completing courses, and participating in workshops that focus on life skills, self-esteem, healthy relationships, and parenting skills. This approach reinforces responsibility while supporting growth and confidence.
TAPP serves teenage parents from across the county. Although the program is housed at Marcos de Niza High School in the Tempe Union High School District, it is not limited to that district. In addition to material support, TAPP offers free childcare, transportation, mentoring, counseling, and ongoing support. Students enrolled at the school may also receive case management services.
Patti shared that many of the young parents served through TAPP never expected this to be their story. Many feel scared, overwhelmed, and judged as they navigate parenting while still in high school. They are growing up very quickly and often feel isolated, unsure of where to turn for support. Through the faithful leadership of the Outreach Committee and the generosity of our congregation, these young parents are reminded that they are not alone.
On behalf of the Outreach Committee, Patti expressed sincere gratitude to the congregation for the many ways you already support this ministry through prayer, donations, and compassion. She also invited those who feel led to help continue stocking the TAPP Pantry.
We Are Collecting the Following Items:
-
Diapers, wipes, and formula
-
Gently used or new baby clothing (sizes 0–36 months)
-
New only: children’s underpants, bottles, nipples, pacifiers, sippy cups, and teethers
Patti shared a joyful story from just last week when a stroller was donated. When she arrived at the school, the response from the young mothers was immediate—the stroller was claimed within seconds, and the girls were absolutely overjoyed. This moment served as a powerful reminder of how even one donated item can make a meaningful difference.
Volunteers are also needed to help support this ministry. Whether you donate supplies or offer your time, your involvement makes a meaningful difference for these young families.
Donations may be dropped off in the Narthex in the wicker basket labeled “TAPP” beneath the Mission Bulletin Board.
Patti closed by sharing Matthew 25:40, a verse that captures the heart of this ministry:
“Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.”
Thank you for supporting teen parents with hope, care, and generosity.
